Sanremo 2019: Mahmood Wins with "Soldi," Will Represent Italy at Eurovision
/Sanremo 2019 has officially come to an end, and with it came the anticipated announcement of the artist who will be representing Italy in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest.
On Saturday, February 9, Mahmood won the five-day-long Festival with “Soldi,” a catchy trap-influenced autobiographical track co-written and produced with Dario “Dardust” Faini and Charlie Charles (Ghali, Sfera Ebbasta). The song, which wonderfully incorporates lines in Arabic along with North African rhythms, explores the 26-year-old’s relationship with his father, who left the family when Mahmood was just a child.
Born in Milan to a Sardinian mother and Egyptian father, Mahmood has written for Italian recording artists Elodie, Marco Mengoni, and Michele Bravi, and landed on the Ariston stage this year as a result of his Sanremo Giovani win in December. Today he officially confirmed that he will in fact represent Italy at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest following speculation that he was possibly dropping out.
