[INTERVIEW] Italian Pop Artist Sara Cruz Talks Dreamy Single "Lost On Love"

Born in Italy and based in London, Sara Cruz is catapulting into the mainstream one irresistible song at a time.

Thanks to collaborations with international stars such as Flo Rida and features in TV shows and video games, the talented artist has begun to carve a path in the industry and is now shifting out of classic pop into an irresistible brand of dream pop that will leave listeners around the world swooning.

Earlier this spring, Cruz released her single “Lost On Love” featuring the production of UK producer Clyde Jones (aka Glisten Beats). With an ethereal delivery, the singer and songwriter offers an honest and relatable story, speaking to the complexities of love and the uncertainty that can consume us when a previous romance attempts to make a return in our lives.

Cruz sat down with Musical Notes Global to discuss more about “Lost On Love” and the evolution of her new sound. Check out the full interview below.

Musical Notes Global: What made you want to shift into a new sound?

Sara Cruz: I think it all happened gradually. And to properly answer this question I have to go back ten years, to when things got started for me.

Ten years ago music technology wasn’t as advanced as it is today, libraries and vsts were a lot less and a lot more expensive, therefore searching for a specific sound or trying to create a specific sound could take a very long time. So I relied on finding producers with more experience and skills than I, to create the sound that I was looking for.

The results were never what I had in mind because I hadn’t experimented enough with the sounds and had no control over the production. Keeping on searching for the right collaborators was time-consuming and expensive, so after releasing a few records, I put my dream project on a side and concentrated more on the songwriting side of things by working with established publishers, that would put me forward for writing sessions, which made more sense at the time.

So for years I mainly wrote big pop songs so that the publishers could hopefully get a cut for a big artist, and don’t get me wrong, I loved doing those sessions, but I got carried away by the overwhelming requests that kept on coming and for the sake of ‘pleasing’, I ended up forgetting what I was doing as an artist.

When the cuts weren’t coming in as much as I hoped, I started losing confidence in myself as a songwriter and even more as an artist, until the end of 2019 when I got married and my husband restored a great lot of faith in me. I finally took more time for myself to improve my music production and broadened my music playlists, rediscovered great classics from the 80s and taking it all in.

This whole process of new and old findings brought me gradually to where I am now.

A year ago I have also reconnected with a great producer friend of mine Clyde Jones, we shared a lot of music back and forth at first and ended up working on new songs, experimenting with textures & sounds, and ‘Lost on Love’ came to be.

MNG: What was "Lost On Love" inspired by?

SC: Musically it was inspired by a lot of artists I’m fond of I would say, I tried to dig deep and blend old and new soundscapes, then I let Clyde fill in the gaps and bring his world to it. I was looking for a dream sound, something simple but ethereal, mainly because that is my musical taste preference that’s all.

The video shot for this single wants to reflect the message of the song, that in a very empirical and abstract atmosphere questions the uncertainty of the future for a love that once was and seems to have resurfaced, and whether that could or could not be again.

MNG: What does the song represent for you?

SC: A new beginning in my musical journey.

MNG: What do you hope your fans take away from "Lost On Love" after listening?

SC: I hope they find their own meaning in it, I hope it leaves something positive in their hearts, a warm feeling, a gateway from a stressful day, and if I’m lucky a great memory they can forever hold.

MNG: How do you think your Italian roots have influenced your work? Are there any Italian artists on your playlist right now?

SC: I think that in general, when you speak more than one language this gives you a great opportunity to see the world from different perspectives and points of view. For example, if I watch the news in Italy and they report some news about another country that I’m familiar with, I can easily tell if that information is accurate or not. It’s like having an extra tool at your disposal.

So with music, I’m happy that I get to have a broader vision coming also from the Italian music scene because I believe that there are a lot of great Italian artists who write great lyrics on top of great music, I’m definitely influenced by some of the styles.

Some of my favorites are Calcutta, Achille Lauro, Rino Gaetano, Maneskin and Motta, who by the way is from my hometown Livorno.

Also, because my husband is Turkish and we spend a good deal of time in Turkey as well, I got to get familiar with a lot of great indie artists from there too, but this is perhaps for another interview.

MNG: What are you looking forward to next?

SC: I, like everyone else, first and foremost would like for this craziness and nonsense going on in the world right now to stop. I personally look forward to doing more traveling and I would like to do that knowing the world is somewhat at peace.

From a career point of view, I definitely look forward to more great collaborations and producing a full album, finally pursuing what I left unfinished years ago and taking it from there.
