My Playlist: Terra Naomi
/Award-winning indie folk-pop singer and songwriter Terra Naomi first made her mark on the world in 2007 with her globally-received single "Say It's Possible," a response to Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth.
Ten years later, Naomi does it again, returning this month with her new single "Machine Age." Released in time to mark the one year anniversary of Donald Trump's inauguration as the 45th President of the United States, the anthemic track serves as a lyrical release for the singer, who delivers a powerful statement through reflection of a year of personal emotional exhaustion and of the political strife that has occurred as a result of Trump's first year in office.
Today Terra shares a little girl power with Musical Notes Global by leaving us a playlist of some of her favorite songs from female artists to start off the week. Listen below!
"Top of the World"-Patty Griffin
"Patty Griffin is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Her voice gives me goosebumps every time."
"I Will Always Love You"-Dolly Parton
"Dolly Parton is another one of the greatest songwriters of all time. She has occupied the #1 spot on my list of "dream collaborations" and I don't know if it will every happen...and if it were to happen, I'm not sure I could handle it anyway... She's also been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ community, which is not the case for many country artists of her generation, or country artists in general, for that matter. She's an incredible artist, but even more importantly, seems to be an incredibly compassionate, kind, generous human being."
"A Case of You"-Joni Mitchell
"It took me a little while to love Joni Mitchell, but once it happened, it was intense and I never looked back. I think it took me a minute to let her in because people used to compare my voice to hers, which at this point is the greatest compliment. But when I was a teenager, I was uncomfortable with anything sincere, authentic, earnest, feminine sounding. Which is ironic, because my voice was and is all those things. I guess it's part of the journey for those of us who started out with more than our share of self-loathing. So I didn't like anything that sounded vulnerable. Now it's all I care about. She is arguably the greatest artist of all time. At least on my list."
"(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"-Aretha Franklin
"I mean...please....this video even has the Obamas in it?!? Goosebumps and tears all the way through."
"Feeling Good"-Nina Simone
"I tried to find a live video, but the selection is limited. So just close your eyes and listen..."
"Red Dirt Girl"-Emmylou Harris
"I love Emmylou Harris. Her voice has this fragile, restrained quality...it conveys so much emotion. This is one of my favorite songs."
"Let My People Go"-Diamanda Galas
"I discovered her as a kid, and she really freaked out my parents. I gotta be in the right mood, but her performances still give me chills. I think I really connected to her story, too. 'Plague Mass' was the first album of hers I heard, written about the AIDS crisis, for her brother. The first guy I ever thought I was in love with was HIV+, so we would get drunk and make out a lot, but that was all. I connected with the music on many levels."
"You've Got a Friend"-Carole King
"Another one of the best songwriters of all time. And I love her voice and the way she delivers a song."
Terra is currently preparing her new album, which is scheduled for release this summer.
