Guest Blog: Julie Elody Talks Anxiety & How It Influenced Her Latest Single "The Lighthouse"

Singer-songwriter Julie Elody doesn't hide behind a mask. In fact, she is refreshingly open with her listeners, even about her personal struggle with anxiety.

After serving as a lead vocalist in a funk-rock band for three years, Elody has started a solo career and her music is just as genuine as she is. Her latest single "The Lighthouse" is a little window into her battle with anxiety and serves as an encouraging reminder that everything is going to be alright, even when it feels like it's not.

On Friday she dropped the song's official music video that, at times, is dark but beautiful all the same with images that bring to life a range of emotions. She shared the full story behind the track with Musical Notes Global in an exclusive guest blog. Read her thoughts below.

"Even if you don't suffer from an anxiety disorder, I’d reason to bet that you’ve been overwhelmed by your feelings and put them off only to have them bubble up in your face in some way. That’s what The Lighthouse is to me. I had been suffering with an undiagnosed anxiety disorder for years and I had gotten pretty good at pushing things down by distracting myself; surrounding myself with noise. Then, that day in my car, the radio broke and I was stuck listening to my own thoughts. It was a very powerful moment for me, and I wrote The Lighthouse that night.

"When I approached Lonely Eskimo Productions I literally said to them, “I have this idea and I want to light things on fire, can we light things on fire?” We did; we did light things on fire. But the video became more defined and coherent with their experienced input. The idea behind the video is that I’m trapped in this room, the way it feels to be trapped in your own head during an anxiety attack. There are TVs everywhere showing nothing but static, representing the white noise I create in my life to desperately distract myself. That’s all I can reveal...about the video but I assure you, it’s dark, it’s powerful and I'm very proud of it.
